I talked to an Asian friend that is nearly fluent in English. He studied in USA and UK for one year each. His dream is to be a translator. He refused to speak his own language while living here or in the UK and quickly learned English to a native Level. He also hung out and made friends with Americans /British only while studying here.

IPod touch / iPhone:
If you have an iTouch or iPhone you can access wireless internet many places around the USA and find helpful information quickly about transportation, buses, subways and General directions until you learn enough about your city to go places yourself.
Over half of the foreign students I know have an itouch / iPad2 / iPhone now.
Makes things really easy for you finding info on the fly as you need it in several languages.

Medical English: Los Angeles, California
One of the best Medical English preperation courses I have heard about is at KAPLAN English school right next to UCLA in Los Angeles, California.
They have several specialized English programs for students who want to transfer into UCLA.
Check out the Kaplan -UCLA location website for details:

Getting an English speaking/international job-blog #2
Tell your university English teacher that you are serious about finding an English speaking job.
When I was an English teacher, I knew alot of great companies that hired English speakers. I had access to many high level managers that where looking for good English speakers.
Your university teachers/professors will know LOTS of people and companies that hire English speaks. Use their networks. Many young students never asks me to help them find work or good jobs.
Ask your American/English speaking friends to coach you to do a foreign style interview.
Ask them to coach you how to speak and give good answers to a foreign hiring manager.
Ask them to proof read and format your resume in Western style to look good when a hiring manager reads it. These things are very valuable.
Practice interviewing verbally with your English speaking friends to practice good English interview skills. Practice good body language, good intonation, confidence and verbal speed during and interview. Make a script the first time and learn from it. Review it 10x or more before an interview.
Go to your city hall and ask if there is an American Chamber of Commerce (American Business group). Also, Canadian, Australian, English Chamber of Commerce.
Go to their monthly meetings and talk to the local business owners in your area/city.
These business owners are great resources for information and know ALOT about foreign businesses and possible jobs.
Join a local English speaking theater group, making dramatic plays in English:
Many great English speakers join these groups: doctors, lawyers, airline staff....all for fun.
These people all come together to have fun and are super good resources of information. You can learn ALOT very quickly from just listening and asking simple questions in these groups.
Good luck
Getting a good job-Using English
Make a list of everyone you know who works for an international company that you know.
Ask ALL of your friends and their parents who they know that can advise you about working for an international company.
University professors:
ask ALL of your English professors at schools who they know in your country that works for and English speaking or international company.
Research:
-ask all of these people to meet you and talk.
-make a list of all the foreign companies in your area/city.
Ask them the following questions specifically:
-what they do for their company?
-what is the internal company culture they work for?
-how does the company really run on the inside?
-where to they have branches around the world-what cities?
-what workers usually get transfered overseas to these branch cities?
-what can I do to get transfered overseas?
-what kinds of skills do I need to have to work at a branch office
-does your company pay for training classes, English classes, after I get hired?
-does my country have a working visa treaty with America, Australia, Canada, Japan or England?
-How long to most workers stay in overseas jobs? How many years? Can they stay longer if they want to?...or is there a maximum number of years the company allows to work overseas?
-What benefits does the company give to overseas employees? Free housing, extra spending money, long vacations to visit family back home?
-How will I be paid my salary? (Yen, US dollars, English pounds)
-Will my salary be wired to my private bank or will I receive it by mail express?
-Is there a relocation fee that the company will pay when I move to a foreign country?
Making Friends
Do you want more friends ??
BE A FRIEND !! BE A FRIEND !! BE A FRIEND !!
Many shy students tell me that they want to make more fiends or that they do not have many friends. That is their own fault usually !!
You must BE A FRIEND yourself to attract people to be your friend !!
You must call/text people to let them know you are free.
You must invite them on a REGULAR basis to do things together.
Everyone is busy usually, but you need to text/call new people to let them know you want to spend time with them.
Call/text several people at your school to hang out and have fun with.
Use the MEETUP.com website to join social groups in your city and find new friend group.
Joining sports groups is a great way to meet new friends too.
MISTAKE:
many foreign students only hang out and talk with people from their own country, and never talk to american native English speakers. THIS IS A BIG MISTAKE !! You must force yourself to talk with Americans in your free time. You English will get really good this way and you will make new friends that way. DO NOT STAY WITH YOUR OWN CLASS OR SAME COUNTRY PEOPLE. VERY IMPORTANT. I see this happen all the time. It is really sad, especially for people who only stay in America a short time.
Cheap Textbooks-Save your money !!
Don't buy books at college bookstores unless you absolutely have to!!
Many college bookstores charge really high prices on textbooks. Especially on specialized English textbooks.
A foreign student bought a new textbook for $80 USD. I was really surprised how much he paid for the new book. Afterwards, I told him to look online (amazon) and buy it used or rent it for the semester/quarter. He found the SAME books, used for $30. He bought it right away and received it 2-3 days later in the mail a his house. $50 savings.
Be smart, and look up your books online.
I always choose my classes in advance for the next quarter and find other students in the next class I will take and offer to buy their books off them in the middle of the quarter. I offer them half price. They usually take my offer. I saved $175 this quarter on used books, usually $325 new!!
I also found all my used textbooks online also.
