I talked to an Asian friend that is nearly fluent in English. He studied in USA and UK for one year each. His dream is to be a translator. He refused to speak his own language while living here or in the UK and quickly learned English to a native Level. He also hung out and made friends with Americans /British only while studying here.

IPod touch / iPhone:
If you have an iTouch or iPhone you can access wireless internet many places around the USA and find helpful information quickly about transportation, buses, subways and General directions until you learn enough about your city to go places yourself.
Over half of the foreign students I know have an itouch / iPad2 / iPhone now.
Makes things really easy for you finding info on the fly as you need it in several languages.
